Muhammad Herlian

Muhammad Herlian is a boundary-pushing guitarist from Indonesia, known for his fluid command of multiple styles. Born in Bengkalis and now based in Pekanbaru, he started on bass at age 10 before switching to guitar at 15—where he quickly carved out his own voice. As a teenager, he racked up over 20 wins in regional and national guitar contests, earning respect for his adaptability and feel. His early professional years saw him play with groups like Appergio, Lara, and ADHAREZA, but it’s with Geliga Malay Jazz that he found his musical home. With Geliga, Herlian has played major jazz festivals across Indonesia, including Java Jazz, Jazz Gunung, and Bandaraya Jazz.

After stepping away from guitar between 2019 and 2021, Herlian returned in 2022 with a renewed focus, taking 3rd place in the Vola Guitar Contest. That comeback kicked off a string of international competition successes: 1st in the PURR Guitar Contest, 2nd in JTC’s April 2023 challenge, a Top List finish in the JTC x Strandberg Challenge, and Top 10 in the NUX Contest 2024. These results show not just skill, but a clear drive to keep evolving. Through online content, Herlian now shares his unique phrasing and refined technique, putting a spotlight on fusion’s emotional core. He remains active with Geliga, performing in cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, and throughout Sumatra and Java.

Despite rising recognition, Herlian stays grounded and focused on his next chapter. He’s currently writing original material for his debut solo release while continuing to engage fans through guitar videos and live shows. Influenced by shape-shifting artists like Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Chick Corea, and John Mayer, Herlian’s playing blends technical depth with heart. His aim is simple: make the guitar speak clearly and with meaning. With a strong creative voice and a growing presence beyond Indonesia, Muhammad Herlian is carving out a space that’s entirely his own.

Why Vola ?

My Vola guitar(s)

"In my opinion, Vola Guitar is a very modern instrument, with a unique and cool design. The sound really fits my genre. I use Vola Guitar with a real amp and a guitar effects processor during live performances. For recording, I go direct—from the Vola and processor straight into Logic Pro. For my content, it’s the same as my recording setup—just direct. I’m a simple guy, because in my opinion, tone is in the fingers."
