Tone Talk and Test Drives: The 2025 Dallas International Guitar Festival

WHERE THE MODERN AND VINTAGE MESH:

Every spring, thousands of guitar lovers make their way to Dallas for what’s become a true tradition in the music world. The Dallas International Guitar Festival—held this year from May 2nd through May 4th at Dallas Market Hall—has grown from humble beginnings in 1978 to become one of the most respected and well-attended guitar events anywhere. What started as a small gathering of local collectors and builders is now a massive celebration of guitars, gear, and the people who love them. It’s not just a show—it’s a weekend-long hangout for players, fans, and anyone who finds joy in six strings and good sound.

For Vola Guitars, the weekend was a welcome return to familiar ground. The booth saw a steady stream of longtime friends and new faces, many of whom stopped by to catch up with the team and try out the latest models. Standout favorites included the JZ FRO in Sunburst Gloss, Shell Pink Gloss, and Copper Aged Gloss finishes, as well as the OZ 7 QGM J3—Quentin Godet’s signature 7-string—and the ZVA 4P and 5-string basses. The booth even welcomed a surprising number of bassists eager to check out the Vasti 5 STM and ZVA offerings. Younger players were especially engaged this year, asking thoughtful questions about the Japanese build quality, the fine attention to detail, and the unique finishes—all at a price point that continues to impress. One highlight of the weekend was a fun collaborative video shoot with our friends at Bad Cat Amplifiers, featuring the JZ FRO in action.

Adding to the excitement just outside of the Vola booth was a packed performance lineup that blended familiar names with rising talent. Artists like Andy Timmons, Joanna Connor, Greg Koch, Sonny Landreth, and Mark Lettieri  brought their own unique styles to the stage across the weekend. For those who wanted more than just a show, the “10 Under 20” competition gave a spotlight to young, up-and-coming players, while workshops and clinics offered insight into everything from technique to tone shaping. Whether you came for blues, jazz, shred, or something in between, there was inspiration around every corner—and plenty of opportunities to walk away with something new. Surrounded by that creative energy, Vola’s presence felt right at home among the players shaping the next chapter of guitar music.

Amid the hall’s sea of vintage instruments, Vola’s display offered something refreshingly different—a modern approach to guitar design that still tips its hat to the classics. Whether it was players picking up a guitar for the first time or seasoned pros looking for something new, the energy at the booth was genuine and inspiring. The Dallas International Guitar Festival’s longstanding history, consistent growth, and widespread recognition have cemented its place as the premier event of its kind. And for us, it was another reminder of why we do what we do: to make instruments that connect people, start conversations, and invite everyone into the fold.
